Local H kick butt

By DARRYL STERDAN

Anybody can rock out with a band. But how many groups can kick butt with just a singer-guitarist and a drummer? Here's one: Zion, Ill., garage-rock oddballs Local H. Right there, the H's distinctive approach makes their scrappy third album, Here Comes the Zoo, an appealing standout amid the sludgy seas of soundalike nue-metal. What makes it even better is that main man Scott Lucas has a desperate rasp and a grunge songwriting style lifted from Nirvana, coupled with screwball humour and pop smarts straight out of Cheap Trick circa 1978. When he merges those influences on wry ditties like Rock & Roll Professionals, Creature Comforted and Bryn-Mawr Stomp, you realize the biggest group in the world couldn't make these guys and these songs cooler than they already are.
